Nightwish frontwoman Floor Jansen has delivered a powerful and deeply personal critique of organized religion, detailing her journey away from the faith she grew up around. In a new interview, the celebrated vocalist explained how her early questions about the violent and guilt-ridden imagery of Christianity ultimately led her to reject organized religion as a “manmade desire to control” responsible for some of history’s greatest atrocities.

Speaking with Brocarde, Jansen explained that her skepticism began in childhood, where she struggled to reconcile the concept of a loving God with the brutal imagery and doctrines she encountered in church.

“On one hand, they say that God is about love, and you come into church, and the first thing you see is a dead man nailed to a cross that has suffered tremendously,” she recounted. “And if that is not horrible enough, it’s done because of your sins. So you’re even supposed to feel guilty for it. I’m sorry — where is this love?”

She described this core contradiction as the starting point for a deconstruction of faith that continued into her adult life. She also recalled her visceral reaction to the concept of communion. “Then I need to eat his body, drink his blood. I think it’s f***ing disgusting — pardon my French,” she stated bluntly.

This personal confusion evolved into a broader critique of the historical impact of religious institutions. “The more I learned about religion, the more I came to feel, like, okay, so we’re basing certain wisdom on a book written by someone thousands of years ago, with interpretation after interpretation… leading to all kinds of trouble,” she explained. “Not to mention organized religion, which is just causing the worst gen**ides and most horrible situations in the history of mankind.”

This historical view led her to a stark conclusion about the true nature of organized faith. “There is no love. And if that is the higher power, then I think it’s maybe a manmade desire to control,” she concluded.

However, Jansen was careful to distinguish her rejection of organized religion from a belief in a more abstract spirituality. While she dismisses religious dogma, she remains open to the idea of a force beyond human comprehension. “I do believe there is something out there that we just haven’t understood yet,” she admitted.
