A Los Angeles court has ruled that Jillian Lauren Shriner, an author and the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, will not face jail time for her role in a chaotic April incident where she was shot by police. The author, who was originally booked on a charge of “attempted murder,” was granted a two-year mental health diversion.
The ruling was handed down today, on Friday September 26, by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Susan J. DeWitt. Under the terms of the diversion, the charges against Shriner will be dismissed if she successfully complies with a set of court-ordered conditions for a period of two years. These conditions include that she must not own any firearms, must avoid drugs and alcohol, and must attend regular therapy sessions.
The case stems from a bizarre and traumatic incident that took place at the couple’s home on April 8 of this year. The situation began when police were pursuing a hit-and-run suspect on foot through the Shriners’ neighborhood. When one of the suspects attempted to enter their property, police followed in pursuit.
According to police reports and bodycam footage released after the incident, Shriner emerged from her home and allegedly fired her gun at the suspect. When officers arrived, she then allegedly pointed the weapon at them and refused commands to lower it. An officer then shot Shriner in the shoulder.
Following the incident, she was taken into custody, booked for “attempted murder,” and later released on $1 million bail. In a subsequent court appearance, she entered a plea of not guilty.
The mental health diversion ruling brings a legal resolution to a chaotic and traumatic chapter for the Shriner family. The case highlights the complex and often tragic outcomes that can arise when a home defense situation intersects with a high-stakes police pursuit.
