More than three decades after Kurt Cobain was found dead in his Seattle home, fresh forensic claims are once again challenging the long-standing conclusion that his death was a su*cide. A veteran forensic scientist now argues that key elements of the physical evidence do not support the original ruling and instead point to a staged crime scene.
The renewed scrutiny comes from Bryan Burnett, an 80-year-old forensic specialist with experience spanning more than 3,000 cases. Burnett, whose background includes g*nshot residue analysis, bloodstain pattern interpretation, and crime-scene reconstruction, asserts that Cobain’s death was a homicide made to appear otherwise.
According to Burnett, critical forensic protocols were absent when authorities first processed the scene in 1994, leading to what he describes as premature conclusions. Speaking to The Sun, Burnett stated:
“In my estimation, the bloodstains on Cobain’s shirt and pant leg could only have been deposited by someone else after the gunsh*t,” adding that no bloodstain pattern analyst was present at the scene.
Burnett further claimed that Cobain’s body had been moved and later repositioned inside the greenhouse where he was discovered, suggesting the location was altered to support a su*cide narrative. He also argued that toxicology findings raise serious doubts about whether Cobain could have acted alone.
One of the most disputed aspects of the case has long been the morp**ne concentration reportedly found in Cobain’s bloodstream. Burnett and other researchers involved in the review contend that the recorded level would have caused severe physical impairment. They argue that this would have made it unlikely for Cobain to inject himself, handle a shotg*n, and fire it without assistance.
Burnett also took issue with the photographic documentation of the scene, saying key visual evidence was compromised.
“Everything was totally dark, so they needed someone with Photoshop experience to bring out professionally what those photos show,” he said.
In drawing comparisons to previous investigations, Burnett cited cases he worked on in which homicides were staged to resemble su*cides, including the 1991 death of Marine Colonel James Sabow. He suggested similar patterns were present in Cobain’s case.
The findings were compiled in collaboration with a group known as “Who K*lled Kurt,” led by Michelle Wilkins. The group presented Burnett’s forensic report to Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes in November 2025, along with ballistic materials submitted to the King County Medical Examiner.
Rather than demanding an immediate reclassification of Cobain’s death as a homicide, the group formally requested that the cause be changed to “undetermined” and that the investigation be reopened.
As of now, Seattle authorities have not issued a public response to the submission.
