Traffic co-founder and acclaimed solo artist Dave Mason has died at the age of 79. The legendary musician passed away on April 19 at his home in the Carson Valley.
His passing was confirmed through a statement posted to his official social media channels:
“It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dave Mason.”
“On Sunday, April 19, after cooking an amazing dinner with his wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with his beloved Star (the maltese) at his feet. He passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair, surrounded by the beautiful Carson Valley that he loved so much. A storybook ending. On his own terms. Which is how he lived his life right up until the end.”
“He leaves a lasting imprint on the soundtrack of our lives and the hearts he has lifted. His legacy will be cherished forever.”
The guitarist’s death follows an extended period of medical difficulties. In September of last year, Dave Mason formally announced his retirement from live performance, concluding a 60-year touring career. He had previously canceled his entire 2025 touring schedule in June of that year while recovering from a severe infection contracted in March. Prior to that, a routine medical examination in September 2024 revealed a serious heart condition that required immediate attention and caused a round of tour postponements.
At the time of his final tour cancellation 10 months ago, Dave Mason shared the following statement regarding his health:
“With deep regret, I must cancel all tour dates for 2025 due to ongoing health issues stemming from the infection I had in March.”
“I’m incredibly grateful to my team of doctors — this has been challenging territory, to say the least. A heartfelt thank you to all the fans, and to my family, band, agents and the venues who’ve waited patiently and supported me throughout this journey.”
“Your kind messages have lifted my spirits more than words can express. Recovery is a long road. My love for you all runs deep.”
Dave Mason built a foundational legacy in rock music spanning six decades. After rising to international prominence as a founding member of Traffic, he launched a highly successful solo career. His catalog of written and recorded solo classics includes tracks such as “Feelin’ Alright“, “Only You Know and I Know“, “Shouldn’t Have Took More Than You Gave“, “We Just Disagree“, “Let It Flow“, and “Every Woman“.
Beyond his primary bands and solo work, the musician served as a prolific session player and collaborator. Throughout his career, he recorded and performed with a massive roster of legendary acts, including Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Graham Nash, Cass Elliot, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, Delaney & Bonnie, Spencer Davis Group, and Eric Clapton.
