Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has released “Stormwatcher“, the latest single from his upcoming solo album From The Dark, due on October 23.
The song is built around a sea theme, telling the story of a ship caught in a storm, and comes with an animated music video based on the lyrics and imagery of singer Jørn Lande.
Explaining the song, Lande said: “It channels something from within, something real.” He described the lyrics as a story about struggle and sorrow as life moves from birth to death and beyond, adding: “We are the captain of our own vessel, a ship crashing through unknown and sometimes challenging waters, always navigating forward, steering steady through every storm, driven by dreams of new horizons and longing for something new.”
On From The Dark, Iommi is joined by Lande, who has co-writing credits on every song, bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil, known for his work with Feeder and Robbie Williams. The album was co-produced by Iommi and Mike Exeter, his long-time engineer, producer and co-writer.
Speaking about the record, Iommi said: “It’s an album we’ve really enjoyed making. We’re not trying to prove anything — it’s a great album, it rocks!”
“Stormwatcher” follows the first single, “World Alone“, which was also released on September 4 as a limited-edition seven-inch vinyl single, backed with an instrumental version of the song. “World Alone” is also available to learn on Gibson‘s guitar app.
The deluxe CD edition includes two bonus tracks, “Scent Of Dark” and an extended version of “Deified“. Iommi first released both instrumentals alongside fragrances created with Italian perfume house Xerjoff, “Scent Of Dark” in 2021 and “Deified” in 2024. Both came out of his friendship with Xerjoff designer and perfumer Sergio Momo, who also plays guitar on the two tracks. When “Scent Of Dark” came out, Iommi said he had “four or five hundred” unused riffs saved on his phone.
Lande has worked with Iommi before. In 2010, he sang with Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice of Heaven & Hell at a tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio at the High Voltage festival in London’s Victoria Park, where they were also joined by former Deep Purple singer and bassist Glenn Hughes.
From The Dark arrives just over a year after Black Sabbath‘s final concert, Back To The Beginning, held in Birmingham on July 5, 2025.
