Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello is mourning the loss of his mother, Mary Morello, who has passed away at the age of 102.

Morello shared the sad news with fans on Sunday night (July 12), posting a series of photos of his mother on social media, including a touching image of him holding her hand. Along with the pictures, the guitarist wrote: “Mary Morello is forever with the Rebels of Light & Song. (1923-2026).”

Mary Morello‘s life extended far beyond being the mother of one of rock’s most recognizable guitarists. She was a dedicated educator, humanitarian, and activist who spent decades fighting for social justice and equality.

Throughout her life, Mary stood against racial injustice, challenged Jim Crow laws, supported anti-colonial movements in Africa, and advocated for causes including the United Farm Workers, the Urban League, and the fight against apartheid. She also spoke out against the Persian Gulf War while continuing her efforts to promote peace, education, and human dignity.

The news of Mary‘s passing follows Tom‘s decision last month to cancel several European festival appearances so he could take care of his ailing mother. The guitarist withdrew from performances at events including Tons Of Rock in Norway and the BBK Music Legends in Spain.

Following the announcement, members of the music community shared messages of support and remembered Mary‘s influence.

System of a Down vocalist Serj Tankian paid tribute to her, writing: “We will all miss Mary dearly. She was an inspiration.”

Metallica also offered their condolences, commenting: “Much love to you and your family, Tom.”

Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx shared his sympathy as well, writing: “So sorry for your loss. What a warrior.”

Mary‘s dedication to activism and education had a profound impact on Tom Morello, whose own career has often reflected themes of social awareness and political expression. Her lifelong commitment to justice and equality leaves behind a lasting legacy that continues through those she influenced.
