Three Days Grace Vocalists Dismiss Rivalry, Adam Gontier Says Fans ‘Deserved’ The Reunion

For the first time in over a decade, Three Days Grace is operating with a dual-vocalist lineup.

For the first time in over a decade, Three Days Grace is operating with a dual-vocalist lineup, featuring both original frontman Adam Gontier and his successor Matt Walst. While the arrangement might seem ripe for internal competition or fan division, the singers insist that their current tour in support of the new album, Alienation, is entirely focused on unity and fan service.

In a new interview with Estonia’s AlteRock, the duo discussed the unique dynamic of having two lead singers sharing the stage. When asked if they worried about fans splitting into opposing camps, Gontier rejected the idea of any rivalry.

“No, not at all. We did this mainly for the fans,” Gontier explained (as transcribed by Blabbermouth). “Obviously, we’re doing it ’cause we’re having fun doing it, but the whole idea was just to — we felt like the fans kind of deserved to see something like this. And so, yeah, there’s never any kind of competition or anything like that.”

Matt Walst reinforced this sentiment with a sports analogy, emphasizing that the band’s expanded lineup—which also includes drummer Neil Sanderson, bassist Brad Walst, and guitarist Barry Stock—is working toward a singular purpose.

“We play as a team. We’re big sports fans, and, yeah, we just put the best team together and we’re all on the same team with the same goal — to win,” Matt added.

Reflecting on his return to the group he left in 2013, Gontier suggested that the reunion felt somewhat preordained.

“I think things probably happened for a reason, for the most part. Yeah, that was a long time ago. Lots of things have changed, I guess, over the last 10 years or so. And I think we’re kind of better than ever at the moment.”

The conversation also touched on Matt Walst‘s pivotal role in keeping the band alive over the last decade. When the interviewer suggested that Matt was viewed by some as the “savior” of Three Days Grace, he remained humble.

“I don’t know about the savior, but, yeah, it was a life-changing event. And, yeah, here we are now, better than ever, and it’s more fun than ever,” Matt responded.

Gontier, however, was quick to validate his counterpart’s importance, noting that their shared history growing up in the same small town was the key factor that made this current reunion possible.

“If anybody else had to come in, when I did leave the band, if it had it been anybody else that came in, we wouldn’t be doing this now, because we grew up as friends and stuff together,” Gontier said. “So, yeah, you’re absolutely right — if it wasn’t for Matt, none of this would be happening. So, yeah, it’s pretty amazing.”

The band is currently riding high on the success of Alienation, released in August via RCA Records. The album has already spawned No. 1 hits with “Mayday” and “Apologies.” Following sold-out runs in Canada and the U.S. earlier this year, and an ongoing trek through Europe with Badflower, the band has announced a massive 2026 world tour.

The 2026 Alienation tour will launch in February in Fort Wayne, Indiana, featuring support from I Prevail and The Funeral Portrait on U.S. dates, while Finger Eleven and Royal Tusk will join for select Canadian shows. The tour is scheduled to conclude in November in Los Angeles.
