Matt Walst says Three Days Grace have started gathering ideas for a new album and will begin writing it next year.
Alienation was the record that proved Three Days Grace could work with two frontmen. The next one will show whether it was built to last.
Vocalist Matt Walst told “100.3 The Bear” in Edmonton” that material is already accumulating, though the real work starts in 2027.
“After this month, we’re gonna take a couple months off, and then we’re back out on the road. But, yeah, we’ve already started getting ideas together and stuff. And, yeah, we’re gonna start writing a new record next year,” Walst said.
That matters more than a routine album tease. Alienation, released on August 22, 2025 through RCA Records, was the band’s eighth album and the first to feature both Walst and returning original singer Adam Gontier. A follow-up written the same way turns a reunion into a working arrangement.
The commercial case for continuing is straightforward. Alienation produced two Mainstream Rock number ones in “Mayday” and “Apologies“, the latter finishing 2025 as the seventeenth most-played song on rock radio, with “Kill Me Fast” issued as the third single that October.
Gontier rejoined full-time in October 2024, ending an eleven-year absence, and the band kept Walst rather than replacing him. Alongside them are drummer Neil Sanderson, bassist Brad Walst and guitarist Barry Stock, making the group a five-piece for the first time.
Walst told ABC Audio earlier this year that the two of them found their footing quickly on stage.
“It just felt natural from the get-go,” Walst said at the time. “When we’re singing songs together, it just felt right where I should sing and Adam should sing, and it came together pretty easily.”
For Gontier, the appeal runs the other way. The band released three albums while he was gone, and singing that material is something he looks forward to.
“All the songs that Matt did and the band did when I was away or when I was gone, they’re all great, and the albums are amazing,” Gontier told ABC Audio. “I always listened to what these guys did, and there’s just so many good songs. To be able to sing them with Matt is awesome. It’s a lot of fun.”
His first full show back came on February 25, 2025, when Three Days Grace opened for Disturbed at Ford Idaho Center Arena in Nampa, Idaho, on the American leg of “The Sickness 25th Anniversary Tour“. It was his first complete performance with the band in twelve years.
The groundwork had been laid two years earlier. On April 19, 2023, Gontier walked out during a Three Days Grace support slot for Shinedown at the Probst Arena at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and sang “Never Too Late” and “Riot” from 2006’s One-X. A second guest appearance in Nashville that October preceded the announcement that he was back permanently.
The connections between these musicians go back to school. Gontier, Brad Walst, Sanderson, Phil Crowe and Joe Grant formed Groundswell in Norwood, Ontario in 1992, most of them still teenagers. That band folded in 1995, and Gontier, Sanderson and Brad Walst regrouped as Three Days Grace two years later. When Gontier left in spring 2013, his replacement was Matt Walst, Brad‘s younger brother, then fronting fellow Norwood band My Darkest Days.
Gontier entered rehab in Toronto in 2005 for an addiction to prescription meds, an experience that fed into One-X, including “Pain” and “Over And Over“. When he left the band in 2013, the announcement referred only to unspecified health issue. He later stated that he had gone to pursue other projects rather than to address addiction.
Three Days Grace‘s “Alienation World Tour“, opened in Fort Wayne, Indiana in February and is scheduled to finish in Los Angeles in November.
