Following a controversial exchange with concertgoers during a Sunday (May 31) show in Tampa, Florida, The Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson has spoken out to clarify his stance and defend his right to free expression.
The viral incident occurred at the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre during the band’s current “Southern Hospitality Tour” alongside Whiskey Myers. The tension sparked when a graphic of the band’s signature crow mascot dressed as Uncle Sam appeared on the large video screens, prompting sections of the crowd to initiate a loud “U.S.A.” chant.
According to fan reports and video footage, Robinson quickly interrupted the stadium-wide chant. “Thanks for the geography lesson,” he told the crowd sarcastically. “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.”
The comment immediately drew widespread booing from the audience, prompting the 59-year-old singer to double down. “…for those of you f**king booing us, some of us are not afraid,” Robinson declared to the arena. “And we most assuredly are not f**king ignorant.” Following the confrontation, the band pushed forward into their classic track “She Talks to Angels“, though numerous attendees reportedly headed for the exits in protest.
Speaking with Ultimate Classic Rock on Wednesday (June 3), Robinson addressed the viral fallout directly. “One of the [things] this country [was] founded on is being able to say whatever you want,” he said, “and that’s both sides of whatever you pick.”
Robinson expressed that the exchange was amplified out of proportion to generate online outrage. “I think the whole thing was, of course, blown out of context so people can get clicks and people can stir up the animosity and philosophies or how you feel about life,” he noted. “But be most assured, you know, whatever. It doesn’t matter. In a week, something else will come up that [will stir up] the hornets’ nest.”
The vocalist also took the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions regarding his respect for the military, responding to heavy criticism from veteran concertgoers who attended the show.
“No matter what I ever would say or do or feel about things, there’s no way I would disrespect our veterans,” Robinson explained. “I’m a person that I wish we had moved along as a species not to have violence be the way that we resolve conflicts. But for the people who’ve put their lives on the line and made that sacrifice and dedication, I wouldn’t do that. I can see that for exactly what it is. Other than that, you know, I have to speak my mind. But I don’t have an agenda or anything, you know what I mean? I’m just trying to make a soulful connection with people…”
The Black Crowes are currently touring in support of their recently released tenth studio album, A Pound of Feathers.
The “Southern Hospitality Tour” kicked off last month and features support from country rockers Whiskey Myers and Southall. Throughout the trek, the band has performed classic hits, deep cuts, and various The Rolling Stones covers, while welcoming special guests like John Doe of X, guitar legend Charlie Sexton, keyboardist Ivan Neville, and Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ frontman Kevn Kinney. During a recent Nashville stop, former guitarist Audley Freed even rejoined the group onstage to jam on “Remedy“.
