Suffocation formed in Long Island, New York, in 1988, quickly establishing themselves as pioneers of brutal death metal with landmark releases like Effigy of the Forgotten (1991), Breeding the Spawn (1993), and Pierced from Within (1995). Following their reformation, they unleashed further brutality with Souls to Deny (2004), Suffocation (2006), and Pinnacle of Bedlam (2013)—albums that reaffirmed both their dominance and death metal’s enduring power. With over 2,000 shows across the globe—from the U.S. and Germany to Australia and Brazil—their influence is both far-reaching and undeniable. Hymns from the Apocrypha is their latest album released on November 3, 2023, via Nuclear Blast.
