Pro-shot footage of Soulfly covering Deftones‘ “Headup” at Summer Breeze is online via ARTE Concert.
ARTE Concert has published professionally filmed footage of Soulfly‘s Summer Breeze set, which includes their cover of Deftones‘ “Headup“. The band played the T-Stage at Dinkelsbühl in Germany on 15 August, and the cover comes around 49 minutes in.
“Headup” is not simply a song Max Cavalera guested on. He co-wrote it, sang on it, and took the name of his band from a word in its lyric, the chorus he himself sang.
The song appeared on Around The Fur in 1997, an album Deftones dedicated to Dana Wells, Cavalera‘s stepson, who died in 1996 aged 21. Cavalera wrote his part in the aftermath of that death, and formed Soulfly the same year, a year after leaving Sepultura and on Ozzy Osbourne‘s advice, with guitarist Jackson Bandeira, bassist Marcelo Dias and drummer Roy Mayorga. He has said the pain of that loss made the first Soulfly album difficult to record.
That gives the Dinkelsbühl running order more weight than it appears to have. “Bleed“, from that 1998 debut and featuring Deftones singer Chino Moreno, came immediately before “Headup” in the set, two songs from the same period, played back to back.

Soulfly added the cover to their sets in spring, first playing it on the North American leg behind Chama, and have kept it in through the year. Deftones have been playing it too, including at Aftershock and Louder Than Life last year and across their arena dates.
The Summer Breeze appearance sat in the middle of a dense European run, Reload Festival in Sulingen on 13 August, Rock The Lakes in Switzerland on the 14th, Dinkelsbühl on the 15th and Dynamo Metal Fest in Eindhoven on the 16th.
Cavalera confirmed this week that he has already started writing the follow-up to Chama, which came out in October 2025, and the band open a 25-date US run at Louder Than Life on 18 September, with Nailbomb and Incite.
