Soulfly And Bassist Mike Leon Announce Split

Big news from the Soulfly camp: after a solid ten years, the band and their longtime bassist Mike Leon have decided to go their separate ways. It sounds like it was an amicable split, with both sides releasing statements.

While they figure out a permanent replacement, Soulfly has tapped Max Cavalera‘s son, Igor Amadeus, to fill in for their show on May 3rd.

Mike Leon, who used to play with Havok, joined Soulfly back in September 2015. He stepped in after Static-X bassist Tony Campos left the band earlier that year in May. So, it’s the end of an era for Leon and Soulfly, but the band is already looking ahead with Igor Amadeus joining them for the upcoming gig. Stay tuned for updates on who will be the next permanent bassist.

Soulfly released the following message via Instagram: “After many strong years together, Soulfly is parting ways with bassist Mike Leon. The tribe are still performing at the upcoming Mexico City’s Nu Metal Revolution on May 3rd with the Sorcerer, Igor Amadeus, of Cavalera band, Go Ahead and Die and Healing Magic filling in.”

“We’re going in different directions now and we thank Mike for all the time spent with us rocking hard on stage!”

Max Cavalera also added: “We’re going in different directions now and we thank Mike for all the time spent with us rocking hard on stage!”

Leon also shared his thoughts: “After an incredible 10 year journey with Soulfly/Cavalera, the time has come to move on and pursue new opportunities. I’m deeply grateful for the experiences, the music, and the relationships built along the way—it’s been an honor to grow alongside such dedicated fans.”

He added: “I’ve been proud to contribute to the music community through my work as Director of Artist Relations with ENKI Cases, supporting artists with industry leading gear protection, and will continue to do so.”

“As I look ahead, I’m excited to focus on exploring and creating new musical opportunities! Thank you to everyone who’s been part of the journey so far—here’s to the next chapter!”

Back in August 2021, Soulfly and their longtime guitarist Marc Rizzo went their separate ways due to disagreements. Following Rizzo‘s departure, Dino Cazares from Fear Factory stepped in to play guitar for Soulfly during their shows in 2021 and 2022.

For the past couple of years, Mike DeLeon has been on tour with Soulfly. Before joining Soulfly, DeLeon was part of Philip Anselmo‘s solo project, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, joining them in 2015 after Marzi Montazeri left. Interestingly, Mike also filled in for Zakk Wylde at the initial rehearsal for the Pantera shows in the fall of 2022.
