Following the 2022 release of their album The End, So Far and significant lineup changes, including the arrival of new drummer Eloy Casagrande in early 2024, fans have been eager for news on new music from Slipknot. Recent comments from guitarist Jim Root and percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan, along with insights from Casagrande himself, paint a picture of a band prioritizing their current heavy touring schedule while contemplating a refreshed approach to songwriting.
In a recent interview with Jonathan Graham of Guitar Interactive, Jim Root admitted that dedicated work on new material hasn’t been a primary focus. “Not diligently,” Root stated (as transcribed by Blabbermouth) when asked about a follow-up to “The End, So Far“. “Honestly, we’ve been touring so much since Eloy Casagrande joined the band that my inspiration is nearly zero.”
Root also revealed a desire to move past material written during the COVID-19 pandemic. “And there’s a bunch of music that was written during COVID that I’m not interested in,” he explained. “And I think everybody else in the band gets it too, and I think they’re kind of, like, ‘Okay, we need to just kind of, like, maybe sweep all that sh*t under a rug and start fresh.’ I wanna get touring behind us. I wanna have at least a month off just to shut my brain off and sleep and all that kind of stuff. And then when I find myself going out to my little home studio and putting riffs together, then I’ll know it’s time to start.”
Adding to this perspective, Clown suggested a potential timeline in a recent interview with Alternative Press, though he emphasized there’s no immediate pressure. “Somewhere between 2025 and mid-2026, there’s gonna be writing,” Clown said. “I think it’s gonna be sooner than later. Maybe we’ll be in the studio in the later part of 2025. There are no expectations. No one’s in a rush, but we’re not going to blow it off, either.”
New drummer Eloy Casagrande, who abruptly parted ways with Sepultura in February 2024 to join Slipknot, hinted in an interview with Brazil’s Veja São Paulo that new ideas were explored during his integration into the band. “I think that was also part of the audition. They threw new ideas at me to see what my songwriting was like,” he said. “They wanted to test me in every way.” It was previously revealed that a new song, “Long May You Die,” was recorded during some of these early sessions. However, Casagrande clarified the current status of this material: “We’ve written a few things, and they’re shelved for the time being.” He also noted that at the time of his joining, “the band is focused on celebrating its 25th anniversary,” which Slipknot marked in 2024 by incorporating their classic 1999 red jumpsuits and early mask elements into their stage presentation.
Slipknot has seen other lineup shifts recently, with the departure of keyboardist Craig Jones in June 2023 and drummer Jay Weinberg in November 2023. Weinberg, who stated he was “heartbroken and blindsided” by his dismissal, has since joined S*icidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves.
For now, Slipknot is focused on their live performances. The band has an extensive run of European festival dates and headline shows scheduled for June and July 2025.
