Sleep Token’s recent set at this year’s Louder Than Life festival has sparked backlash after multiple reports surfaced accusing sections of the crowd of intentionally dropping crowd surfers, resulting in at least one serious injury.
According to witnesses, some attendees refused to support surfers making their way across the packed audience, with claims that people were even deliberately pushing or tossing them away instead of helping. The behavior drew outrage online in the days following the performance, with fans accusing each other of negligence and disrespect.
An attendee named Jasmine took to a Louder Than Life Facebook group last week to describe her frightening experience, claiming that members of the crowd threw a surfer “out of anger,” causing him to crash directly onto her head. The impact, she explained, knocked her unconscious and triggered a seizure, leaving her with a severe concussion and a minor brain bleed.
Jasmine condemned those responsible, writing: “To the absolutely rude, ignorant, and disrespectful people in that crowd that had not a single care for the well-being of innocent people, the people that tossed that guy on top of me when I didn’t see him coming…when I wasn’t prepared for that blow…. I hope you feel like absolute [sh*t] for it.”
Others backed up her account, with several commenters alleging that some fans were even chanting “drop that b*h”** as surfers passed overhead. One attendee noted, “People don’t realize how dangerous crowd surfing can be, especially when the crowd doesn’t work together as a team like they are supposed to.”
Louder Than Life, which consistently draws massive audiences, is known for its high-energy sets and chaotic pits, but this controversy has raised new concerns about whether the communal spirit of heavy music is being replaced by careless behavior.
