Iron Maiden, the legendary British heavy metal band, has shared a heartfelt video message to their fans following the conclusion of the European leg of their “Run For Your Lives” world tour. The tour, which commenced on May 27 in Budapest, Hungary, and ended on August 2 in Warsaw, Poland, was particularly significant as it marked the debut of the band’s new touring drummer, Simon Dawson.
In the video, Dawson expressed his gratitude for the warm reception he received from the band’s dedicated following. He stated: “What can I say? It’s been an incredible tour. Obviously, my first tour with Maiden. I mean, I can’t say how much I appreciate the support I’ve had from the fans. You’ve been absolutely incredible to me. I couldn’t wish for more.”
Dawson stepped into the monumental role after longtime drummer Nicko McBrain announced his retirement from touring on December 7, 2024. The 73-year-old McBrain, whose real name is Michael Henry McBrain, made the announcement via a statement on the band’s website and social media, noting that his final show would be that night’s concert in São Paulo, Brazil. Dawson is no stranger to the Iron Maiden inner circle, having been a longtime bandmate of bassist Steve Harris in British Lion.
McBrain‘s decision to retire from the demanding touring lifestyle came after a series of health challenges. In January 2023, he suffered a stroke that caused partial paralysis, and he later admitted he was “worried” it would mark the end of his career with the band. This was not his first health scare; five years ago, he was diagnosed with stage 1 laryngeal cancer, which was successfully treated with surgery.
Despite stepping away from the road, McBrain has made it clear that he will remain a part of the Iron Maiden family and will continue to be involved in various projects, in addition to focusing on his personal ventures and businesses. Iron Maiden officially announced Dawson as their new touring drummer the day after McBrain‘s final performance.
