In a heartbreaking video update to fans, Sick Of It All frontman Lou Koller has revealed that his cancer has returned, just four months after he was declared cancer-free. With grim humor and incredible courage, the New York Hardcore icon told fans: “Unfortunately, the cancer’s come back and he brought some friends with him,” as he prepares to face the next stage of his battle.
The devastating setback comes after a year-long fight against an esophageal tumor, which he was first diagnosed with in June 2024. In a new video posted to the band’s social media on Tuesday, September 30, a visibly thinner Koller gave a candid and direct update on his health.
He said:
“Hey, everybody. What’s up? It’s Lou here. I don’t know if you could tell it’s me, with my new skeletal look that I have going on.”
“Here’s an update for you. It’s not what I wanna make, but, unfortunately, the cancer’s come back and he brought some friends with him.”
“I was having a really hard time with my recovery. I was having a tough time gaining weight and keeping food down. So I had some scans done, and sure enough, he is back. But we’re gonna take it day by day and see what happens.”
“I wanna thank you all again for your moral support. The way you all reach out to me still is very — thank you very much. But I’ll keep you updated and let you know how it goes. All right? We’ll see you soon.”
The video is captioned with: “So bad news is the cancer has returned. So it’s back to square one and start the treatments again. I’ll try to keep you updated as much as possible. Thank you for your love and support.”
The news is a tragic turn for the hardcore legend, who underwent chemotherapy last year. His initial diagnosis prompted a massive outpouring of support from the global music community. A GoFundMe campaign, started by his brother and bandmate Pete Koller, has raised over $300,000 to help with his medical and living expenses, with major donations coming from bands like Rancid, AFI, and the Dropkick Murphys.
In November 2024, a massive benefit concert, “I’m In The Fight With Lou,” was held in New York City, featuring performances from Life of Agony, Municipal Waste, Vision of Disorder, and other hardcore legends, all coming together to support one of their own.
Metal Stop wishes Lou a full recovery.
