Lou Koller, the resilient voice behind New York hardcore institution Sick Of It All, has provided fans with a candid update on his ongoing battle with esophageal cancer. Following the heartbreaking news in September that the disease had returned just months after he was declared cancer-free, Koller released a new video message addressing his current condition.
In the update, Koller described his medical status as a “stalemate,” indicating that while the cancer has been contained, the current course of treatment hasn’t yet yielded the reduction in tumor size doctors were hoping for.
“Hey, everybody. What’s up? It’s Lou. It’s been a while,” Koller said in the video message. “To give you an update, there’s not really much to tell. The treatments are going okay. They’re not really doing much. I’m kind of at a stalemate where the tumors aren’t growing and they’re not spreading, but they’re not shrinking either. So the plan is to keep going with the treatments and see what happens. And after that, we’ll make a new plan.”
Despite the uncertainty, Koller took the time to express deep gratitude for his support system, specifically highlighting the role his family has played in his care.
“I wanna take this opportunity to thank my brother Matt and my sister-in-law Connie for taking such good care of me, letting me live in their house and helping me through this. I wanna thank all of you for all the positive messages, the prayers and all of the well wishes. Thank you very much. Keep ’em coming, keep ’em coming. And I hope y’all have a great Christmas and a happy New Year. I hope next year’s better year for all of us. Take care of each other, all right?! See you around.”
The hardcore legend’s fight began in mid-2024 when doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in his esophagus. After undergoing chemotherapy and initially receiving a positive prognosis, Koller faced a setback three months ago. At that time, he revealed that difficulties with his recovery—specifically gaining weight and keeping food down—led to new scans which confirmed the cancer’s return.
The hardcore community has mobilized in force to support one of its most beloved figures. On November 23, 2024, Irving Plaza in New York City hosted the “I’m In The Fight With Lou” benefit concert. The historic night featured performances from Municipal Waste, Killing Time, Crown of Thornz, and a rare reunion of Vision of Disorder, marking their first live appearance since 2018.
The show also saw Life of Agony take the stage for their first performance since vocalist Keith Caputo announced a detransition process, reverting to his birth name after previously identifying as Mina Caputo since 2011.
Beyond the stage, the financial support has been substantial. A GoFundMe campaign established by Lou‘s brother and bandmate, Pete Koller, has raised over $380,000 to assist with medical bills and living expenses while the band remains off the road. The campaign has seen significant contributions from peers including AFI, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, Snapcase, and Hot Water Music.
