Shinedown made a powerful appearance during the season 24 finale of “American Idol” on Monday, May 11, delivering a collaborative performance with standout contestant Philmon Lee. The guest spot saw the band bridge the gap between their latest material and the classic hits that defined their career.
Philmon Lee, who reached the Top 11 of the competition, was invited back for the three-hour finale to share the stage with the rock veterans. The pairing was a natural fit, as Philmon Lee had previously garnered praise from judge Carrie Underwood for his earlier rendition of Shinedown’s popular cover of the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic “Simple Man“.
The performance began with “Searchlight“, the single from Shinedown’s most recent studio album, Ei8ht. Philmon Lee joined vocalist Brent Smith at the front of the stage, with the two singers trading verses before the full band kicked in.
Following the new track, the group transitioned into their 2008 multi-platinum hit “Second Chance“. The set concluded with a display of high-energy vocal harmonies between Brent Smith and Philmon Lee, providing one of the night’s most intense musical moments. Video of the full collaboration is now available for fans to view online.
The star-studded episode, which aired on ABC and is set to stream on Disney+ and Hulu, featured a wide array of musical guests. In addition to Shinedown, the broadcast included performances from Mötley Crüe, Nelly, Jason Mraz, En Vogue, Tori Kelly, Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms, and Clay Aiken.
The evening also saw the crowning of a new champion. Hannah Harper, a 25-year-old vocalist, was named the winner of season 24, beating out finalists Jordan McCullough and Keyla Richardson, who finished in second and third place, respectively.
The judging panel, consisting of Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and season 4 winner Carrie Underwood, joined host Ryan Seacrest to close out the season. For Carrie Underwood, the finale served as a double duty, as she also performed on stage with Mötley Crüe earlier in the evening.
As American Idol continues its run as a staple of reality competition television, collaborations like the one between Shinedown and Philmon Lee highlight the show’s ongoing influence in connecting established rock acts with a new generation of performers.
