Brazilian extreme metal pioneers Sepultura have officially released “The Place,” giving fans their first preview of the band’s upcoming EP, The Cloud Of Unknowing. Scheduled to arrive on April 24 via Nuclear Blast Records, the new music drops as the group continues their massive farewell tour, offering a final creative chapter to cap off their legendary career.
This new EP is notable for featuring the studio debut of drummer Greyson Nekrutman, who stepped in to replace Eloy Casagrande in 2024. The four-song collection was tracked during a spontaneous, pressure-free recording session in Miami shortly after the band’s performance on the 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise.
Guitarist Andreas Kisser previously opened up about the secretive recording process and the band’s motivations for putting out new material:
“We recorded four new songs with Greyson on drums,” Kisser previously said. I don’t think nobody knows that, but there we go. We have four new songs, and we have the intention, next year, to release an EP, just to celebrate this momentum. It’s original songs that we worked [out]. It’s already recorded and everything, and we’re taking our time, really, to see where it’s gonna be the good time to do it.”
Lyrically, “The Place” tackles intense social and psychological themes. Frontman Derrick Green shared his thoughts on the song’s meaning:
“This song deals with immigrants who have come to a place seeking refuge and start a new life. Once assimilated into a false sense of security and relentless propaganda they began to act out against what they hate about themselves. The transition begins to escape from the self hatred and the lashing out against people who believed in the same ideas. I feel the lyrics truly follow the transitions of the song. Starting with disappointment and arriving at anger.”
