Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach is fed up with online “vocal experts” who critique live performances from the comfort of their homes. In a recent, outspoken interview, he lashed out at these critics, stating they have “no clue what the hell it is that I do” and are unqualified to judge the physical and mental demands of touring.
Bach‘s comments were aimed at self-proclaimed vocal coaches and analysts who post YouTube videos breaking down performances. He ridiculed their process of sitting in a chair in an air-conditioned room and comparing it to the reality of a live show. In a recent interview with Australia’s Spotlight Report, Bach said: “these id*ots watch a video of me on stage, like at Wembley Stadium, running around with no shirt on in hundred-degree weathers… sitting in their chair, watching it on YouTube, thinking that’s the same f**king thing.”
According to Bach, the true test isn’t hitting a single note but singing an entire song, such as “I Remember You,” and delivering the final scream after an hour-and-a-half performance. He challenged his critics directly, telling them, “you can’t do s**t” and “sing the whole f***ing song—then hit the scream at the end in a hundred-degree weather, on no sleep, jet lagged.”
This isn’t the first time Bach has spoken out against live performance critics. In a January appearance on Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta‘s podcast, “The Jasta Show,” he addressed the unpredictability of live shows. He explained that a performance isn’t always perfect, adding that unless a band uses backing tracks, a singer’s emotional and physical state can impact their delivery. Bach insisted that there’s a difference between a human being having an off night and a lack of ability.
Bach summarized his frustration with a powerful statement, calling rock and roll a “dying art” that online commentators simply don’t understand. He concluded: “Don’t even think you know what it is that a guy like me does. I’m not saying this to you—I’m saying this to all the experts in their basement, in their air conditioning. It’s really hilarious.”
