Andy Edwards, the internationally acclaimed artist behind the bronze statue of Motörhead founder Lemmy Kilmister, has been honored for his contribution to the culture of Staffordshire. At the “Your Heroes Awards” ceremony held at the University of Staffordshire, Edwards was named one of three winners of the prestigious Civic Pride Award.
The event marked the conclusion of a six-month community campaign in which residents nominated individuals and groups who have made a significant impact on their local area. Edwards, whose work now stands as a landmark in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, admitted he was unprepared for the accolade.
“It was unbelievable, I was totally taken by surprise, totally shocked. I didn’t know where to put myself really,” Edwards told BBC Radio Stoke. “I’ve got to acknowledge the kindness of all the people who put me forward. It means an incredible amount to me.”
The black-tie event saw 27 awards presented to various community figures, ranging from NHS heroes to courageous children. The evening was hosted by Martin Tideswell, the founder of the awards and director of commercial strategy at the University of Staffordshire.
“We are unashamedly local and proud as we celebrate the unsung heroes from across our communities,” Tideswell said during the event. “Young and old, individuals and groups, the courageous and the selfless. The very best of us.”
The award recognizes the cultural weight of Edwards‘ recent masterpiece. Unveiled on May 9, 2025, during the “Lemmy Forever” ceremony, the statue depicts Kilmister in his 1981 era—a nod to Motörhead‘s historic headlining set at the Heavy Metal Holoc**st at Port Vale Stadium.
The unveiling earlier this year was a massive event for the rock community. Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell attended personally to place Kilmister‘s ashes into the sculpture. The day featured a “roaring 21-rev salute,” a biker corteo, and a gathering of fans who celebrated at local establishments like the Old Post Office and the Market Place Café.
