Satanic Planet release their second album Dead Deities on 30 October, led by the single “Sam Alito’s Mom“.
Satanic Planet have announced their second album. Dead Deities arrives on 30 October through Relapse Records, five years after the group’s self-titled debut, and the first single “Sam Alito’s Mom” is out now with a video.
The band is Lucien Greaves, co-founder and spokesperson of The Satanic Temple, Luke Henshaw of Planet B and Sonido De La Frontera, drummer Dave Lombardo of Slayer, Misfits, Mr. Bungle and Dead Cross, and Justin Pearson of The Locust, Swing Kids and Deaf Club. The four formed in 2021 and, according to the label, worked together in the studio throughout for the first time on this record.
“Sam Alito’s Mom” takes its title from Samuel Alito, the US Supreme Court Justice who wrote the majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade. Greaves and Pearson share vocals across it at a slow, low-tuned pace.
The accompanying video was filmed in a Hobby Lobby bathroom. The retailer was the plaintiff in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, the 2014 case in which the Supreme Court held that closely held companies could claim religious exemption from providing contraception coverage.
The title refers to a clinic The Satanic Temple opened, and Greaves set out the organisation’s position in full.
“In an effort to preserve reproductive rights in the face of theocratic opposition, The Satanic Temple has opened three abortion clinics and is currently working toward opening a fourth. We named the first of our clinics ‘Sam Alito’s Mom‘s Satanic Abortion Clinic’, and following the opening of the fourth clinic, we are going to sue to establish our religious freedom to ship abortion pharmaceuticals to any state in the U.S. regardless of their restrictions on bodily autonomy. This is our fight, and this is our song about that fight,” he said.
The Satanic Temple describes its own aims as encouraging benevolence and empathy, rejecting tyrannical authority, advocating practised common sense, opposing injustice and undertaking noble pursuits. Greaves has said the new album’s lyrics sit closer to those aims than the band’s earlier work, and are more personal.
Satanic Planet signed to Relapse in April. Alongside the record they have been pursuing performances inside state capitol buildings, targeting venues that have hosted Christian nationalist events, and have been confirmed for a show at the Indiana State Capitol.
The drummer has had a busy month beyond this. “Paleomagnetic Resonance“, his collaboration with Lustmord, came out on 11 August, and he features on “Revolution.exe“, the new single from Tyler Bates and Gunship.
