Sammy Hagar Says He’s ‘Done With Being The Van Halen Guy’

Sammy Hagar says he is finished with Van Halen-focused concerts and will take a long break after his Las Vegas residency.

Sammy Hagar has spent two years touring on the decade he spent fronting Van Halen. He says that is finished, and the five Las Vegas dates running now are likely the last of it.

The singer told Eddie Trunk on “SiriusXM” this week that the “Best Of All Worlds” project was never meant to last this long.

“I’m kinda done with being the Van Halen guy. I mean, I’ll always keep some of it in my show. But originally, the ‘Best of All Worlds‘ tour with Joe Satriani, was supposed to only be once and that was in 2024. But it was so damn successful that we got the [Las Vegas] residency, which is what I really wanted,” he said (via ucr).

That tour opened on July 13, 2024 in West Palm Beach, Florida and ran 28 dates across North America, with the bulk of the set drawn from the four albums Hagar made with Van Halen. It has since turned into a residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, 11 shows across 2026, six in March and five this month on September 18, 19, 23, 25 and 26.

The band behind him is Michael Anthony on bass, Joe Satriani on guitar, Kenny Aronoff on drums and Rai Thistlethwayte on keyboards and additional instruments. Jason Bonham played drums on the 2024 run and stepped away at the end of that year.

Hagar‘s argument is that a residency lets him do what a tour cannot. On the road he gets one night in each city and has to lean on the hits. In a fixed venue he can range across fifty years of records, and he wants more of that in whatever comes next.

“I’ve got so much Montrose, those are great songs and fun stuff, I’ve got fans that have been following me since then. You know, the red album, the red rocker era, pre-Van Halen, the Geffen years… I want to do so many things, I don’t want to just go out there and just do Van Halen. But Mike and I are kind of obligated. I like it, but I feel like I owe my old fans more than that,” he continued.

The red album is his 1977 self-titled solo record.

There is one project he has wanted to stage for fifty years and still has not.

“I wanna do my science fiction show. I don’t know how many shows I’ve got left in my life. I wrote this space opera when I left Montrose in 1975. Every album I ever did had a space song on it. ‘Silver Lights,’ ‘Someone Out There,’ ‘Space Station #5,’ ‘Space Age Sacrifice.’ ‘Crack in the World” was the one that really predicted what’s going on in 2025. I don’t know where that came from. In Van Halen, ‘Love Walks In.'”

He added: “These are part of my rock opera, and I want to do it, I really do. And not like a play, no, just go out and put a production together, play small rooms and just play the whole thing from the first song which is ‘Hot Rock‘ to the last song which is ‘Silver Lights.’ It’s a concept, and it’d be like ‘Figure it out, figure out what I’m saying.'”

Two of those songs, “Space Station #5” and “Space Age Sacrifice“, come from Montrose‘s 1973 debut, the album Hagar sang on before leaving the band. “Love Walks In” is from 5150, the first record he made with Van Halen in 1986.

None of it is happening soon. Hagar intends to come off the road after his annual birthday shows and stay off it.

“I’m taking a break, and a long one,” he told Trunk. “I’m gonna figure out what I’m gonna do next year. No tour next year, as of this point. It’s certainly not going to be a ‘Best of All Worlds‘ type tour. I’ll figure out what I want to do. I’m gonna be 80 years old next year… I never even thought that was possible. I’ve only got so many miles left on my f**king tires, and I don’t want to have a blowout out there on the freeway.”

Hagar turns 79 on October 13. He would reach 80 in October 2027.

The first Las Vegas run was documented on Sammy Hagar & The Best Of All Worlds Band – The Residency, a 19-track live album released on October 10, 2025 through Big Machine Rock.
