Swedish metal titans Sabaton have officially kicked off “The Legendary Tour,” debuting a massive and ambitious new stage production at the tour’s opening night at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on Friday, November 14.
The 20-city European tour is the band’s first headlining run in support of their eleventh studio album, Legends, which was released on October 17. As promised, the new show is a massive step up, featuring “The Legendary Orchestra” and an elaborate new stage design.
Bassist and band manager Pär Sundström had previously teased the scale of the new production, which fan-filmed video from Cologne confirms includes two separate stages connected by a walkway. In a recent interview with “Coffee With Ola,” Sundström detailed the band’s vision for the tour.
“We’ve got bigger stuff planned for the upcoming tour [than what we have done before]. And it’s a very special kind of thing, so we have to build it around the Legends album,” Sundström stated. “But I don’t wanna spoil too much. I think it will be exciting to see it. And we are also building a show that is a little bit more than just a rock show, so to say. So we have two stages and something that connects them.”
The Cologne crowd was the first to hear several new tracks live. The 18-song set featured the live debuts of four tracks from the Legends album: “Templars,” “I, Emperor,” “Crossing The Rubicon,” and “A Tiger Among Dragons.” The band also surprised fans with the first performance of “Masters Of The World” since 2007.
