Rush will film every one of their four hometown concerts at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto next week, with the footage earmarked for a potential concert movie.
The dates run August 7, 9, 11 and 13, all sold out, and mark the band’s first Toronto performances since they returned to the stage in June. The Toronto Star broke the news after corresponding with Geddy Lee by email.
“It’s always a hard decision as to where to film a live concert. Given the limited cities we are able to play, the demand for such a film has been off the charts, not only as a keepsake of their experience, but for those many fans that have not been able to see it live. Toronto being hometown made it a natural choice, and being the last mini-residency of four shows, playing over 40 songs which gives us the best chance to capture it all,” Lee said.
He went on: “We know there are fans traveling here from all across the globe and that will make it a special week.This tour, being a celebration of our history and a tribute to [late Rush drummer] Neil [Peart] has been an emotional outpouring from the fans and from us. They have been louder and prouder than ever before, and we hope to capture them letting their ya-yas out while rockin’ their best ‘Tom Sawyer‘ air drum fills!”
Both Lee and Alex Lifeson grew up in the city. A representative for the band told the Star that how the footage will ultimately be used has not been settled.
Allan Weinrib, Lee‘s brother and a long-serving collaborator, oversees the filming. It is his directorial debut after decades producing the band’s screen projects, among them Rush: R40 Live.
That 2015 release was captured in the same building, then operating under the name Air Canada Centre. Toronto also supplied footage for Grace Under Pressure: Tour 1984, meaning a fourth generation of Rush concert film would come from the same city.
This is a separate undertaking from Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple, the documentary premiering September 23 on CBC.
The “Fifty Something” tour opened June 7 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, the venue where Rush played their final show with Peart on August 1, 2015.
It runs 88 dates through to April 10, 2027, finishing in Helsinki, Finland, taking in North America, Europe and South America. The North American leg closes with two nights in Vancouver in mid-December. A residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas has been discussed as a possibility afterwards.
These are “evening with” shows, two sets a night, no support act, each night’s running order drawn from a pool of roughly 40 songs.
When the first dates went on sale in early October 2025 they sold out immediately. The band doubled the length of the tour, then added further shows on top.
German drummer Anika Nilles, who toured with Jeff Beck in 2022, occupies the drum seat. Loren Gold, a touring member of The Who and Chicago, has been added on keyboards.
Gold‘s addition means Rush are touring as a four-piece for the first time in their history. It is also their first tour without Peart since 1974, and their first shows of any kind in 11 years.
Peart died on January 7, 2020 in Santa Monica, California at 67, following a three-year illness with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer. The band announced his death three days later. Lee revealed in 2022 that Peart had wanted the diagnosis kept private.
The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum hosts Rock The Rush Hall in partnership with RushCon from September 17 to 20, featuring newly displayed artifacts loaned by Lee and Lifeson, archival footage from the band’s 2013 induction, and performances by the museum’s house band.
