Robb Flynn From Machine Head Joins Gojira For Sepultura’s ‘Territory’ Cover At Greece’s Release Festival (Video)

French metal powerhouse Gojira delivered an unforgettable moment during their performance at the Release Festival in Athens, Greece, on Saturday, July 19. The crowd erupted when Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn joined Gojira on stage for a powerful rendition of Sepultura’s classic track “Territory.” You can watch the videos down below.

Flynn, who was celebrating his 58th birthday that evening, contributed guitar work and shared lead vocals with Gojira’s Joseph Duplantier. Their combined efforts created a formidable homage to the Brazilian metal legends, eliciting an immense response from the festival attendees.

Gojira has consistently acknowledged Sepultura as a significant influence on their distinct sound. In a 2022 interview with Brazil’s Multishow, Joseph Duplantier reflected on the profound impact Sepultura had on him during his teenage years: “I do remember the first time I heard Sepultura, and it blew my mind. We were in a time in our development as people, in our teenage years, where this sound fueled something in us and inspired us to start what we’re doing today.”

He further elaborated that Sepultura’s evolution, particularly through groundbreaking albums like Arise, Chaos A.D., and Roots, played a pivotal role in redefining the metal genre. “The first Sepultura album I discovered was Arise; it was very death metal,” Joseph said. “And then what they did after that, the Chaos A.D. and the Roots album, redefined metal, really. So I think they are a very, very important band in the history of metal.”
