Jay Buchanan takes his solo acoustic show across 22 US dates from September 11 in Houston, with tickets on sale August 14.
Jay Buchanan has spent most of the last fifteen years singing over four other musicians in rooms built for thousands. This autumn he is doing the opposite, one man, one guitar, and clubs small enough that the front row can hear him breathe.
The Rival Sons frontman has confirmed “Storyteller“, a 22-date solo acoustic run through the United States that opens September 11 at The Secret Group in Houston, Texas and closes October 18 at Valley Bar in Phoenix, Arizona. The route takes in two nights at AmericanaFest in Nashville, a stop at Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown, and a string of small halls across the South, the Midwest and the West Coast.
“This whole thing has been unfolding very organically,” Buchanan said. “Let’s see what we can do here in the States. I’ll be running lean and mean out to see my country and telling some stories. See you soon America!”
The US dates follow a sold-out European run earlier this summer, where Buchanan leaned into the talking as much as the singing. According to the announcement, the format has grown into something built around the space between songs rather than the songs alone.
That approach traces back to Weapons Of Beauty, his debut solo album, released February 6 through Sacred Tongue Records via Thirty Tigers. Buchanan wrote it alone in an underground bunker in the Mojave Desert and recorded it in Savannah, Georgia with Dave Cobb, the producer who has worked on every Rival Sons record since their 2009 debut. The announcement bills the album as their tenth collaboration. It reached number eight on the Americana chart and produced the singles “Caroline“, “True Black” and “Deep Swimming“.
Cobb put it plainly: “I think this record is like seeing into the heart of Jay — no filter, no noise, just pure raw emotion.”
Buchanan also made his acting debut last year in the Bruce Springsteen biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere“, playing the singer of Asbury Park bar band Cats On A Smooth Surface alongside Jake Kiszka and Sam Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet. Director Scott Cooper later sequenced Weapons Of Beauty. In April he turned up unannounced during Cody Johnson‘s headline set at Stagecoach in Indio, California to perform their duet “Rabbit Gets The Gun“. He has also worked with Brandi Carlile, Barry Gibb, Miranda Lambert, Massive Attack and Jason Isbell.
Rival Sons, two-time Grammy nominees for 2019’s Feral Roots and its single “Too Bad“, last released the companion albums Darkfighter and Lightbringer in 2023, and have said they intend to record again.
