Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has sparked online discussion after posting the message “It’s great to be gay” on social media, leading to a wave of responses and a clarification from the musician.

The post, published on X, was met with a mix of support, confusion, and criticism. One fan responded: “Never knew you were gay. But, then I don’t care either.”

As the discussion unfolded, another user defended Flea against the negativity, writing: “It’s interesting people take the time to stop by here just to hate on you for this.”

With the thread gaining traction, Flea stepped in to address the conversation directly and clear up any assumptions about his sexuality. He replied: “I appreciate you. And for the record, I’m straight. I am expressing love, respect and joy for my gay brothers and sisters.”

His response was widely shared, with many praising the message as one of support and inclusion rather than personal disclosure.

While Flea identifies as straight, he has previously acknowledged having experiences with men. Those details, however, were ultimately left out of his memoir Acid for the Children, despite appearing in earlier drafts.

In a 2019 interview with The Guardian, he explained his reasoning: “I didn’t want it to be sensationalised.

“To me, it wasn’t a big deal,” he added. “I was experimenting and it turns out, ‘Hey, I’m not gay.’ So, it’s not really my story.”

He has also previously reflected on the band’s early days in Los Angeles and the communities that supported them before mainstream success. Speaking about an appearance that connected them with the LGBTQ community, he said:
“I felt honoured that they wanted us in the magazine. The gay community in Los Angeles were the first ones to really embrace the Chili Peppers.”
