Tom Morello‘s Canadian tour set to honor his vast musical legacy, including Audioslave material, is underway. Currently playing across Canada, with recent dates including Vancouver and Calgary and upcoming shows in Toronto, Ottawa, and Edmonton in July, Morello is embracing his entire career catalog. This approach is driven by a deep personal connection, particularly to the songs he created with the late Chris Cornell.
The renowned guitarist, celebrated for his work with Rage Against the Machine, has cultivated an extraordinarily diverse career. Beyond Rage Against the Machine, his journey has encompassed the powerful rock of Audioslave, touring as part of Bruce Springsteen‘s E Street Band, leading Prophets of Rage, delving into solo acoustic folk as The Nightwatchman, experimenting with electronica and rock in The Atlas Underground project, and even curating Black Sabbath‘s farewell performance.
In a recent appearance on The Strombo Show, Morello explained the inspiration behind his current tour’s expansive setlist, crediting fellow multifaceted musician Jack White. “I was inspired, in a way, by Jack White,” Morello shared (as transcribed by Ultimate Guitar), noting how White‘s ability to seamlessly integrate music from The White Stripes, The Dead Weather, and his solo career created a “cohesive whole.” This resonated with Morello‘s own desire to fully acknowledge his extensive body of work.
“Why should I sort of undermine any part of my career?” Morello pondered, asserting that performing songs from across his discography “honors all of it.” He underscored his enduring respect for Rage Against the Machine’s material, believing it to be “needed now more than ever.”
However, it is his commitment to Audioslave‘s music that holds a particularly profound significance for Morello. He candidly expressed his daily grief for his former bandmate, stating, “I miss Chris Cornell every day, and playing those Audioslave songs and bringing his spirit to life on stage — [that] is something that’s very, very deeply meaningful to me.”
Morello also highlighted the importance of his The Nightwatchman acoustic records, viewing them as perhaps “the truest expression of myself.” Looking to the future, he revealed he is currently working on what he considers his “first ever solo rock record,” which he believes will further “tie it all together,” uniting the various facets of his distinctive musical identity.
