Primus Unleashes New Song Featuring Maynard James Keenan And New Drummer (Listen)

Primus has returned with their first new studio recording since the Conspiranoid EP in 2022, dropping the brand-new single “Little Lord F*ntanyl.” Described as a blistering and surreal anthem, the track is a twisted fable packed with the band’s signature groove and dark humor. Adding to the unique sound, the song features a captivating guest vocal appearance from Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer), whose distinct voice “slithers through the track with sinister delight.”

Introducing John “Hoffer” Hoffman

This single also serves as the official studio debut for Primus‘s new drummer, John Hoffman. Hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, Hoffman joined the band earlier this year after famously winning the “Interstellar Drum Derby,” a global audition process that saw him triumph over more than 6,100 other hopefuls. “Little Lord F*ntanyl” puts Hoffman‘s intricate and playful rhythms on full display, showcasing the unconventional style that has injected new energy into the band.

Frontman Les Claypool is clearly thrilled with the new addition, stating: “Hitting the road this summer with Hoffer at the helm! This fiery, cheerful, octopus-like drummer from Shreveport, Louisiana has breathed a very potent breath of freshness into this band we all call Primus.”

Claypool elaborated on Hoffman‘s entry into the band: “While splitting the drum duties of his first gig with the mighty Danny Carey down in the Dominican Republic, JohnHofferHoffman has launched himself into the Primus world with all guns-a-blazin’.”

Onward & Upward Tour Plans

The release of “Little Lord F*ntanyl” comes as Primus is currently on the road for the spring run of the “Sessanta” tour alongside A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, celebrating Keenan‘s 60th birthday. Following this unique collaborative tour, Primus will launch their own “Onward & Upward” summer headline tour.

Looking ahead to the summer shows, Claypool revealed: “Fresh from their next jaunt around the states with ‘Sessanta Part 2‘ this spring, Hoffer, Ler, and The Ol’ Colonel will be playing some full-length Primus sets at choice venues across the U.S., dipping into material (mainly at the request of Hoffer) that have not been performed in a many years.”

Claypool encourages fans to witness Hoffman‘s prowess live: “Come see why this amazing fellow was able to rise above over 6100 applicants to win the Interstellar Drum Derby and become the latest, and possibly the greatest, drummer to sit on the Primus drum throne. ONWARD AND UPWARD!!”

The summer tour kicks off July 5th in Paso Robles, California, and features support from Ty Segall and MonoNeon on select dates. It includes stops at iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre, The Salt Shed in Chicago, The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York, and The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, before wrapping up with two nights in Sacramento on August 7th and 8th.
