Poppy, Amy Lee, And Courtney LaPlante Tease Major Collaboration

Poppy, Evanescence’s Amy Lee, and Spiritbox’s Courtney LaPlante spark speculation of a major collab after sharing a photo together.

A potentially major collaboration between three of rock and metal’s most prominent female vocalists appears to be on the way. Poppy, Amy Lee of Evanescence, and Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox have all shared a photo of them together, leading to widespread speculation of a joint musical project.

The photo was also posted by Jordan Fish, the producer and former keyboardist of Bring Me The Horizon, who is widely believed to have produced the track. Fish is no stranger to working with any of the artists; he produced Poppy‘s album, Negative Spaces, as well as Amy Lee‘s collaboration with Halsey, “Hand That Feeds.” Though Spiritbox confirmed that Fish did not produce their most recent album, Tsunami Sea, the band stated they hoped to work with him in the future. Fish further fueled the speculation by commenting a shocked emoji on Poppy‘s post.

The timing of this collaboration is particularly interesting, given a viral incident at the Grammys earlier this year where a red-carpet interviewer mistook LaPlante for Poppy. The moment became a viral sensation after LaPlante humorously played along with the mistake.

In the interview, after being confused for Poppy a second time, LaPlante decided to go along with it. “I am Poppy, and I am really happy to be here, nominated with Knocked Loose,” she said. “I really hope we win.” She then added, “I would be the first woman to win this award. I actually haven’t looked at [how many women have been nominated previously] but I just always know that it’s time for one of us to win. I hope it’s me, or Spiritbox and Courtney.” The collaboration gives a new context to the incident, turning an awkward moment into an inside joke among the artists.

In a separate interview with NME about his production career after leaving Bring Me The Horizon, Fish spoke about working with Poppy. He said she wanted to create “big rock songs,” which was a fun challenge for him.

“She started off doing this erratic, genre-shifty music… it’s not really my expertise to constantly change tempo,” he explained. “In my mind, she hadn’t really put together a body of work that felt super coherent, so that was the challenge – putting her lyrics and flavour over more conventional song structures. It was a painless process [because] she’s not particularly stressed about what she’s making.”

He also commented on her unique vocal style, saying: “Her scream is so cutting and aggressive, it almost makes you feel sick. It’s a horror scream, like someone’s being murdered. It’s so piercing that I couldn’t be in the room!”
