Pop star Olivia Rodrigo has shared a hilarious family secret regarding her mother’s unexpected taste in heavy music. Appearing on the Wednesday night, June 10, episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!“, the 23-year-old singer revealed that during her crowning moment headlining the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago last year, her mother, Jennifer Rodrigo, abandoned her stage to go watch alternative metal pioneers Korn.

The scheduling conflict occurred when festival organizers booked both Olivia Rodrigo and Korn to close out the same night on opposite sides of the park. While promoters assumed the two acts appealed to entirely distinct audiences, Olivia Rodrigo explained to host Jimmy Kimmel that her own household proved to be the ultimate exception.

“My mom likes so many crazy metal bands, which you would never guess just looking at her. I headlined ‘Lollapalooza‘ last year, which was so awesome and such a dream of mine. But they have like headliners go at the same time. So, like on this specific day, it was me and Korn headlining at the same time on like opposite stages. And everyone’s like, ‘Oh, that’s perfect. You know, the Olivia fans will go see Olivia, the Korn fans will go see Korn. You know, there’s really no overlap.’ But there was one overlap, and it was my mom. My mom skipped my show to go see Korn! I let her do it, I’m happy she got her night,” she said (as transcribed by theprp).

The heavy metal fandom isn’t the only surprising musical obsession in the Rodrigo household. During the late-night broadcast, Olivia Rodrigo also noted that her father, Chris, is a massive fan of goth-rock legends The Cure. According to the singer, her father has traveled to see the band perform live 30 times and was even moved to tears upon first meeting frontman Robert Smith, who has since become a collaborator of hers.

To close out her appearance on the show, the pop star delivered a live performance of her latest single, “the cure“.

The television appearance arrives at a pivotal moment for the young artist. Olivia Rodrigo is scheduled to release her highly anticipated new studio album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, this Friday, June 12. To support the new material, she will launch her massive global “Unraveled Tour,” with the initial North American leg kicking off this coming September. Meanwhile, the Bakersfield, California metal legends in Korn are also preparing to head across the Atlantic for their own highly anticipated autumn tour of the UK and Europe.
