Washington, D.C. will host a massive 16-day cultural exhibition this summer, featuring an expansive and diverse roster of musical performers anchored by Poison frontman Bret Michaels. The event, officially named the Great American State Fair, is a cornerstone of the nationwide Freedom 250 initiatives celebrating the United States’ semiquincentennial.
Stretching across the National Mall between the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument, the fair is designed to mirror the grand scale of a World’s Fair by spotlighting the unique heritage of all 56 U.S. states and territories. Alongside daily concerts, attendees can expect traditional carnival attractions, including a 110-foot Ferris wheel and the newly fully restored Smithsonian National Carousel.
While admission to the entire 16-day event is completely free to the public, organizers note that online registration is strictly required to secure entry to the live performances.
The musical festivities are scheduled to kick off on June 25 with a headlining performance by country music icon Martina McBride. The following evening, June 26, the venue was initially slated to host the “I Love the ’90s” tour configuration. While Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory remain attached to the date, fellow billings Young MC and Milli Vanilli publicly withdrew from the lineup immediately following its initial press rollout.
On June 27, the focus shifts to classic R&B and funk. Legendary bands The Commodores and Morris Day and the Time were originally announced to headline the evening, but both acts have since officially distanced themselves from the event and dropped off the bill. Pop-rap star Flo Rida is slated to anchor the stage on July 2, immediately followed by rock legend Bret Michaels on July 3.
The festival schedule will also feature prominent appearances from elite military ensembles, including the U.S. Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, the Airmen of Note Jazz Ensemble, and Army Downrange Rock. Organizers plan to reveal additional high-profile performers in the coming weeks.
Freedom 250 CEO Keith Krach emphasized the unifying vision behind the extensive gathering in an official statement (via The Hill):
“The Great American State Fair will bring together people from all 56 states and territories to celebrate the traditions, innovation, music, military heritage, freedom and entrepreneurial spirit that define our nation.
Krach further noted:
“The performers, innovators, military heroes, and everyday Americans showcased here represent the very best of who we are, and the boundless opportunity ahea,” calling the gathering: “a moment for America to come together.”
The booking aligns seamlessly with Bret Michaels‘ long-standing public support for American service members. Coinciding with the event’s promotional rollout over Memorial Day weekend, the vocalist shared a deeply personal tribute on his social media accounts, reflecting on the extensive history of military service within his own family.
“As the son of a veteran, and to all those in my family who served and continue to serve — from my Uncle Nick Sychak, who made the ultimate sacrifice in combat during WWII, to my cousin Bob, who received two Purple Hearts in Vietnam, and to all our veterans — on behalf of my family and myself, I dedicate this day in memory of our fallen heroes.”
Michaels continued:
“To those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we are afforded, for the right of opinions, and the awesomeness of being able to honor, remember, and celebrate a day like today… thank you.”
“Have an incredible day, my friends!” he concluded.
