Following the death of legendary Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne on July 22nd, fans are rallying behind a campaign to immortalize him in his hometown of Birmingham. A petition has been launched on Change.org urging authorities to rename Birmingham International Airport in honor of the iconic “Prince of Darkness.”
The petition, started by local fan Dan Hudson, has quickly gained traction, racking up thousands of signatures within hours. In the petition, Hudson describes Osbourne as “the most important musician ever to hail from Birmingham” and suggests that renaming the airport would be “a fitting tribute to his extraordinary career and contributions to the arts.”
The campaign comes amid an outpouring of emotion from fans around the world. In Birmingham, the Black Sabbath Bridge on Broad Street has become a spontaneous shrine, with mourners leaving flowers, candles, and messages in tribute. The Birmingham City Council has also opened a public book of condolence at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, allowing fans to pay their respects in person through the evening of July 23rd.
Supporters of the petition point to other UK airports named after cultural icons, such as George Best Belfast City Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport, as precedents.
Ozzy Osbourne passed away at the age of 76, just weeks after reuniting with his Black Sabbath bandmates for a farewell performance. Paramedics reportedly battled for over two hours to save him after being called to his Buckinghamshire home. Thames Valley Air Ambulance confirmed that a helicopter was dispatched to the scene on the morning of July 22nd.
His sisters recently spoke to The Mirror, sharing their heartbreak: “It was a shock. He still had plans and things he wanted to do. We don’t know the details of his death, it’s still too early. It’s just so sad.” They added, “To us, he was our brother, not a celebrity. But the outpouring of love has been overwhelming. We’re so thankful he died in England, in the country he loved.”
As the petition continues to gain support, fans hope Birmingham will formally recognize the man who helped shape the sound and spirit of heavy metal—starting with a name that would echo his legacy to travelers from around the globe: Ozzy Osbourne International Airport.
