The animal rights organization PETA has made a formal and public appeal to Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, asking him to temporarily change his name to “Robert Plant Wool.” The unusual request is part of PETA‘s new “Plant Wool Month” campaign, which is scheduled for November to promote sustainable, animal-free textiles.
In a letter sent to the iconic rock singer, the organization argued that the name change would help raise awareness for plant-based wool alternatives, such as those made from hemp, cotton, and even orange waste.
The letter, as seen by Far Out, states: “This temporary tweak to your famous moniker would help highlight the impressive array of cruelty-free, sustainable plant wools and the innovative designers using them. It would also let those stocking their winter wardrobes know that there are dozens of 100% animal- and plastic-free fibres to keep them cosy, without harming a hair on a sheep’s head.”
Elisa Allen, PETA‘s Vice President of Programmes, further explained the initiative in a public statement.
“Plant Wool Month celebrates animal-free and plastic-free yarns that promote sustainable fashion while lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and protecting the animals with whom we share this precious planet,” Allen said. “PETA is asking Robert Plant to sing the praises of plant wool with a temporary name change that reminds everyone that nothing compares to soft, natural, and eco-friendly plant wool.”
PETA‘s campaign is designed to highlight what it calls the “environmentally-destructive” and “abusive” nature of the sheep’s wool industry, citing methane production, land clearing, and chemical use as major environmental concerns.
Appealing to the singer’s own words, the organization’s letter to Plant concluded: “As you’ve wisely said, the past is a stepping stone, not a millstone. The future of wool is plants, and we hope you’ll join us to celebrate this kind, green evolution of functional fashion. Thank you for your consideration.”
Robert Plant, who recently released a new album titled Saving Grace, has not yet responded publicly to the request. He is scheduled to begin a 10-date tour of the United Kingdom this December.
