Paul Stanley has publicly declared that “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” is the biggest song in the entire KISS catalog, citing its modern streaming dominance as proof. The statement from the legendary guitarist and vocalist comes as the 1979 track, which was once maligned by many in the hard rock community, has amassed over one billion streams on Spotify.
In a post on X, the 73-year-old musician shared the monumental numbers, writing: “THE BIGGEST KISS SONG OF ALL TIME IS… ‘I Was Made for Lovin’ You‘ with 1.3 BILLION total streams on Spotify as of late August and approximately 850 THOUSAND daily streams!! Amazing and THANK YOU!”
The song, which Stanley co-wrote with Desmond Child and Vini Poncia, originally appeared on the band’s 1979 album, Dynasty. At the time, its disco beat and pop sensibilities alienated a segment of the KISS fan base, and even bandmate Gene Simmons expressed his disdain for the track.
The song’s co-writer, Desmond Child, has been open about the creative process and the reaction it received. In an appearance on the “Talk Is Jericho“ podcast, Child recalled how he used a drum machine to fuse a dance beat with heavy guitars, a concept that Simmons “never bought,” and “still doesn’t.”
Child also revealed that he was “so hurt“ when the band publicly criticized him in interviews while promoting a different album. He recalled calling Stanley to ask, “Why don’t you criticize your enemies, not the friends that put money in your pocket?” The incident was eventually resolved when Simmons offered a brief apology. As Child remembered, he came home to a message on his answering machine that simply said, “Hi. It’s Gene. Sorry.”
Despite the initial controversy and internal friction, “I Was Made for Lovin’ You” was a massive global hit, becoming a top-10 single in numerous countries and a number-one smash in France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The song’s journey from a contentious creative choice to its current status as KISS‘s most-streamed track highlights the enduring power of its pop-infused songwriting.
