British gothic metal pioneers Paradise Lost are nearing the completion of their highly anticipated follow-up to the 2020 album Obsidian. Recent interviews with the band’s guitarists confirm that the new material is recorded, with sights set on a release later this year.
Speaking recently with Alejandrosis, guitarist Aaron Aedy provided an update on the album’s progress, stating plainly (as transcribed by Blabbermouth):
“It’s not fully mixed yet, but it’s recorded.”
However, Aedy remained tight-lipped about the specific musical direction, preferring to keep fans in suspense until the final mix is complete:
“No. It’s like opening your presents before Christmas. No, I don’t wanna go into the new album too much just yet, ’cause I’ll wait to see what it’s like when it’s mixed. It’s almost finished, but not quite.”
Adding a potential timeline, guitarist Greg Mackintosh told Chile’s PowerOfMetal.cl in March 2025 that the release is likely targeted for the autumn. Acknowledging the significant gap since their last studio album, he noted:
“It’s been the longest time we’ve ever had between albums. But that’s kind of because of the pandemic as well… So sh*t happens. And, yeah, hopefully it’ll come out September, October time this year.”
While details on the new songs are scarce, vocalist Nick Holmes offered insights into the band’s modern, remote songwriting process in a November 2023 interview with Metal Global. He described how ideas are developed through file sharing rather than in-person jams: “The writing process is 100 percent different to how we used to write when we were younger… Everything’s through file sharing, e-mail…” He elaborated that while different, this method involves careful consideration: “There’s a lot of ping-ponging ideas backwards and forwards, and you have more time to dwell on things.” Despite the changes, Holmes affirmed the importance of instinct: “Gut reaction’s pretty much… you’ve gotta go with a gut reaction.”
This forthcoming album follows not only 2020’s Obsidian but also the band’s recent project, Icon 30, a complete re-recording of their influential 1993 album Icon, which was released in December 2023 to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
Before the new album arrives, Paradise Lost is set to embark on “The Devil Embraced” North American tour very soon, kicking off at the Milwaukee Metal Fest on May 16 and wrapping up at Maryland Deathfest on May 24, 2025.
Fans eagerly awaiting new material from the gothic metal legends can now look forward to a potential release around September or October 2025, following the band’s upcoming live dates.
