Original KISS Guitarist Ace Frehley Dies At 74

Ace Frehley, the legendary original lead guitarist of KISS and one of rock’s most influential figures, has died at the age of 74.

In a statement, Frehley’s family said: “We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever!”

Frehley had faced health challenges in recent weeks. In late September, he canceled a scheduled performance at the Antelope Valley Fair in Lancaster, California, after a “minor fall in his studio” that required a hospital visit. At the time, fans were reassured: “He is fine, but against his wishes, his doctor insists that he refrain from travel at this time.” On October 6, he canceled the remainder of his 2025 tour due to ongoing medical issues.

Born Paul Daniel Frehley on April 27, 1951, in The Bronx, New York, Ace helped define the sound and image of KISS with his signature riffs, soaring solos, and space-themed stage persona. He played on some of the band’s most iconic albums, including Kiss (1974), Destroyer (1976), Love Gun (1977), and Dynasty (1979), contributing fan favorites like “Shock Me,” “Rocket Ride,” and “Talk to Me.” His 1978 self-titled solo record, featuring the hit “New York Groove,” remains a highlight of his career.

After departing KISS in the early 1980s, Frehley continued to record and perform with Frehley’s Comet and as a solo artist, releasing acclaimed albums including Anomaly (2009) and 10,000 Volts (2024). He returned to KISS for their 1996 reunion tour, thrilling fans worldwide.

Ace Frehley’s influence on rock and metal is enduring. From his groundbreaking guitar style to his unforgettable stage persona, he inspired countless musicians and left a permanent mark on rock history.
