Original Arch Enemy Vocalist Johan Liiva Responds To Reunion Rumors Following Alissa White-Gluz Split: ‘I Am Just As Surprised As All Of You’

Original Arch Enemy vocalist Johan Liiva has officially silenced growing speculation that he might return to the melodic death metal titans following the sudden departure of frontwoman Alissa White-Gluz.

Liiva, who held the microphone for the band’s first three seminal albums—Black Earth (1996), Stigmata (1998), and Burning Bridges (1999)—addressed the rumors directly on social media. Responding to a fan inquiry about whether he would be “going back” to the lineup now that the position is vacant, Liiva made it clear that a reunion is not in the cards.

“No, I am not. I am just as surprised as all of you,” Liiva wrote. “I think Alissa was perfect for AE. The mystery goes on…”

The rumors began swirling almost immediately after Arch Enemy announced on Sunday, November 23, that they had parted ways with White-Gluz after a celebrated 12-year tenure. The band’s statement was brief, offering no specific reason for the split but hinting at future plans with the sign-off: “See you in 2026.”

White-Gluz confirmed the separation in her own statement, expressing gratitude to the fanbase she has cultivated over the last decade.

“After 12 years in Arch Enemy, we have parted ways,” she wrote. “I am forever thankful to the thousands of amazing fans I have met along the way. Thank you, Beastlings!”

The Canadian vocalist did not waste time mourning the end of her era with the Swedish legends. Coinciding with the announcement, she released “The Room Where She Died,” the debut single from her upcoming solo album, signaling an immediate pivot to her own artistic ventures.

White-Gluz originally joined Arch Enemy in 2014, taking over for Angela Gossow, who had replaced Liiva in 2000. Under White-Gluz‘s command, the band released four successful studio albums, including the recent Blood Dynasty (2025). Her departure marks the end of a significant chapter for the group, leaving fans—and apparently former members like Liiva—guessing as to who will step into one of the most demanding roles in heavy metal.
