Oasis launched their long-awaited reunion tour in Cardiff on Friday night (July 4), delivering not just a powerful musical performance but also a deeply emotional tribute to late Liverpool star Diogo Jota.
Taking the stage at the Principality Stadium for their first live show in 16 years, the Gallagher brothers performed to a sold-out crowd of 75,000 fans. What began as a triumphant return quickly turned into a moment of heartfelt remembrance, as Liam and Noel paused the set to honor Jota, who tragically passed away just one day earlier.
The 28-year-old Portuguese forward and his younger brother, André, 26, lost their lives in a horrific car crash in northwest Spain early Thursday morning. The tragedy struck less than two weeks after Diogo had married his longtime partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shared three children.
About halfway through the set, Liam introduced “Live Forever” with a few somber words, dedicating the beloved anthem to Jota. As the band played, a massive image of the footballer in his iconic Liverpool No. 20 jersey appeared on the stadium screens, igniting a sea of red flares in the crowd. Many waved Portuguese flags, and an overwhelming wave of emotion swept through the venue.
Social media was flooded with tributes from fans, many calling the gesture “beautiful,” “gut-wrenching,” and “a fitting sendoff for a legend gone too soon.”
The reunion show — which had already been billed as one of the biggest musical events of the year — took on an unexpectedly poignant tone that won’t soon be forgotten.
Oasis will perform again in Cardiff tonight before moving on to Manchester’s Heaton Park on July 11, where the tour continues with a series of massive homecoming shows.
