Sweden’s masters of melancholic heavy music, Katatonia, are set to release their new album, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State on June 6th, 2025, via Napalm Records. The Stockholm-based collective once again demonstrates their unparalleled ability to walk the delicate line between profound darkness and a distinctly Scandinavian sense of despair, all while subtly threading a glimmer of hope into the listener’s experience.

Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State signifies the next chapter in Katatonia‘s sonic journey, evolving from the groundwork laid by their 2023 album, Sky Void of Stars and simultaneously introducing their two new guitarists, Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland. Katatonia in 2025 comprises the enduring core of vocalist and founding member Jonas Renkse, bassist Niklas Sandin, drummer Daniel Moilanen, alongside the fresh guitar talents of Elgstrand and Svalland.

Today marks the arrival of the album’s lead single, “Lilac” offering fans an initial taste of the sonic landscape to come. The track immediately captivates with Jonas Renkse‘s signature vocals, seamlessly interwoven with hypnotic rhythms, weighty riffs, and intricate progressive touches. Accompanied by an evocative official music video, Katatonia new single “Lilac” resonates deeply, reaffirming band’s unique power to immerse listeners in a vortex of stirring emotions. You can listen to the single down below.

Jonas Renkse, lead vocalist of Katatonia adds: “We are proud and excited to announce our new album, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State, coming out via Napalm Records on June 6. As always, these songs are the stories that thrive in the corner of the eye, obscured by the light but waiting to come alive in the dusk of our morbid existence. Please enjoy the first scent – ‘Lilac‘.”

Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State boasts a pristine production that accentuates the dynamic interplay between hushed moments and powerful surges. The album masterfully crafts tension through the contrasting textures of weighty riffs, intricate guitar harmonies, ethereal synthesizers, and nuanced atmospheric layers. Tracks like “Thrice” and “Warden” pulse with a vibrant energy, while “Wind of No Change” takes on an almost ritualistic quality, seamlessly blending subtle electronic elements with Katatonia‘s signature enigmatic soundscapes. “Temporal” achieves a delicate balance between fragility and strength, its intense verses building towards a soaring, emotionally resonant chorus. The stunning “Efter Solen” (Swedish for “After the Sun“), featuring lyrics in their native tongue, subtly echoes themes from Jonas Eika‘s 2018 short story collection, employing a minimalist yet impactful instrumentation.

Even after three decades, Katatonia keeps finding new ways to express deep emotions in their music, moving easily between feeling fragile and showing their strong artistic side. Their sound paints pictures of dark futures, inner struggles, peacefulness, and beauty, all at the same time. Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State proves they’re still making amazing music. Jonas Renkse produced the album, Lawrence Mackrory recorded it at NBS Audio and The City of Glass, Adam Noble mixed it, and Robin Schmidt mastered it at 24-96 Mastering.
