Legendary Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury is preparing to release his debut solo album, Bridge To Resolution. Set to arrive on June 5 via Dissonance Productions, the upcoming record will be available on both CD and vinyl formats.
Written and recorded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new album represents a deeply personal creative shift for the veteran musician. When global touring came to a sudden halt, the unexpected downtime allowed him to confront complex questions regarding identity, family, and his own creative process. Thematically, the record is driven by the psychological concept of “shadow integration,” the idea that true self-discovery requires confronting the darkest aspects of one’s personality. The resulting music chronicles an emotional journey from despair toward ultimate resolution.
While Shane Embury is universally recognized as a pioneer of extreme metal and grindcore, Bridge To Resolution explores entirely different sonic territory. The eight-track collection highlights his lifelong appreciation for atmospheric goth and post-punk, drawing direct inspiration from legendary acts like Cocteau Twins, Killing Joke, and The Mission. The expansive, contemplative songs are built upon rich layers of synthesizers, heavy bass, layered vocals, and guitars—all performed entirely by the bassist himself.
To complete the recording lineup, he recruited drummer Carl Stokes (formerly of Cancer, Groundhogs, and Current 93). The album’s production was handled by Simon Efemey, widely known for his work with heavyweights like Paradise Lost, Crowbar, and Amorphis.
Having joined Napalm Death in 1987, Embury remains the group’s longest-serving member, performing on 15 of their 16 studio albums. Championed early on by the influential broadcaster John Peel, the band achieved massive global success and is widely credited with inventing the ultra-fast grindcore subgenre. Beyond winning numerous awards from Kerrang! and Metal Hammer, they made history in 2017 as the first extreme metal act to perform at the prestigious Glastonbury Festival.
Outside of his main band, the prolific bassist has maintained numerous side projects, including Lock Up, Brujeria, and Dark Sky Burial. His extensive collaborative history also features work with Buzz Osborne of the Melvins, Tim “Ripper” Owens of Judas Priest, Billy Gould of Faith No More, Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, Cardiacs, and Yard Act.
