The enigmatic British rock outfit known as President has officially returned with a brand new lyric video for their latest single, “Mercy“. Operating entirely under the cover of masks and anonymity, the mysterious project has been widely rumored to be the brainchild of vocalist Charlie Simpson, best known for his work with the pop-punk act Busted and the post-hardcore band Fightstar.
Blurring the lines between cinematic atmosphere, electronic experimentation, and crushing heavy metal, the group launched in 2025 with a strict focus on musical intent over public image. The release of “Mercy” intentionally coincides with the conclusion of the band’s massive North American tour, where they provided direct support for Bad Omens. The dynamic new track delivers a massive sonic punch, seamlessly blending unforgettable vocal melodies with granite-heavy riffs and aggressive breakdowns.
Discussing the thematic inspiration behind the new anthem, President offered a brief but poignant statement regarding the track’s heavy lyrical weight.
“Throughout history, religion has been tied to profound division and loss. This song is a reflection on that reality, and a way for me to come to terms with what it means on a human level.”
This latest offering follows the group’s previous standalone single, “Angel Wings“, which arrived earlier this year in February. That track quickly garnered significant critical acclaim across the heavy music press. Rock Sound praised the song as “a blend of bubbling synths, spine-tingling melodies and crushing riffs, while Revolver magazine noted how the group “refined their mix of modern metal, pop and electronic music, contorting itself from twitchy programmed beats towards a cavernously djenting boom.” Vice also championed the anonymous act, stating their “style is deeply compelling as it’s paired with a refreshingly honest approach to songwriting.”
Deliberately distancing themselves from the modern hype machine, the band aims to build an organic, deeply invested following designed for discovery rather than mass marketing. In a recent cover feature with Revolver, President elaborated on their minimalist, anti-industry approach to releasing music, which began with their fall 2025 debut EP, King Of Terrors.
“The music industry has elements of fast fashion to it these days. Things just come and go. Everything’s really quick. Everyone’s shouting for attention and there’s just so much noise, and it just becomes a f**king conveyor belt. [We] wanted to step back and not be a part of that. But if people are interested, and they want to enter into this world, we’ll grab them with open arms.”
