Mr. Bungle have reached back into a long-dormant chapter of their catalog, performing “Retrovertigo” live for the first time in more than two decades. The unexpected revival took place on January 15 during the band’s appearance at Teatro Estudio Cavaret in Zapopan, Mexico.

Originally released on the band’s 1999 album California, “Retrovertigo” had not appeared in Mr. Bungle’s live setlists since 2000. Since reuniting in 2019, the group have largely focused on material from their early, more thrash-oriented era, leaving much of their ’90s experimental output untouched — a decision that has long been a point of discussion among fans.

What prompted the song’s sudden return remains unclear, but the performance marked a notable shift, offering a rare glimpse into a period of the band’s history that has been mostly absent from their modern live shows.

The performance came as Mr. Bungle continue their Latin American tour as support for Avenged Sevenfold. The connection between the two bands adds another layer of intrigue, as Avenged Sevenfold previously covered “Retrovertigo” in 2017, at which time they publicly described themselves as “massive fans of Mr. Bungle.”

Fan-filmed footage of the Zapopan performance has since surfaced online, capturing the band revisiting the track in front of a surprised crowd. While this marks the first full-band performance of “Retrovertigo” in decades, vocalist Mike Patton did perform the song live in 2019 during a Mondo Cane show, separate from Mr. Bungle’s activities.

Mr. Bungle’s remaining tour dates in the region include both arena support slots and headline appearances.
