Mike Portnoy Addresses Rush Rumors, Losing Co-Producer Status, And Dream Theater’s Possible ’50th-Anniversary Tour’

“Bands like Metallica and Anthrax are coming up on 50 soon, so yeah, I think it’s doable.”

Since making his highly celebrated return to Dream Theater, legendary drummer Mike Portnoy has been keeping incredibly busy. With the band’s 40th-anniversary tour in full swing and their 2025 album Parasomnia delighting long-time listeners, the percussionist recently sat down with Metal Hammer to answer series of fan-submitted questions.

During the candid Q&A session, Portnoy tackled several massive topics, including the rumors that he tried to join Rush, the hardest reality of returning to his original band, and whether Dream Theater will make it to a 50th anniversary.

Following the tragic passing of Neil Peart, rumors frequently circulated that Portnoy had offered to step in behind the kit for the Canadian prog-rock titans. When asked directly if he ever tried to join Rush to fill in for Peart, he immediately shut the idea down, noting that he respected the situation too much to insert himself.

“No. I read Geddy’s book and he mentioned about all the drummers offering themselves to them and how much it turned him and Alex [Lifeson, co-founder/guitarist] off. I did send my condolences to Geddy and Alex after Neil passed, but I never tried to throw my hat in the ring for Neil’s gig. It’s a sacred role that should only be filled if Geddy and Alex choose for it to be so. Sure enough, here we are with them choosing to finally do so [with Anika Nilles], which has been incredible.”

The interviewer then pressed further, asking if he would have taken the job had the band explicitly approached him. Portnoy admitted that while he would have been deeply honored, the timing of Rush‘s current touring plans would have created a massive conflict with his highly anticipated homecoming.

“If they hypothetically ever approached me with it, of course, I would have done it with the utmost respect and honour. But frankly, I’m relieved they didn’t. First of all, filling Neil’s shoes is going to be impossible. If anybody ever thought Mike Mangini filling my shoes was tough, try filling Neil Peart’s shoes! And I came back home to Dream Theater, which is where I belong. So if, hypothetically, they’d approached me with this reunion that they’re doing, it would have put me in an awkward position because of the timing of it all.”

While his return to Dream Theater has been largely seamless, Portnoy confessed that stepping back into the fold required him to surrender some of the creative control he previously held. Before his 2010 departure, the drummer had heavily guided the band’s musical direction. Upon his return, he had to accept that guitarist John Petrucci was now fully at the helm in the studio.

“The biggest pill for me to swallow was not being a co-producer any longer. That’s something that John Petrucci took over once, because he and I were co-producers on all the albums in the last decade before I left the band. It’s an area that I’ve always been passionate about, but John mentioned that it was important for him to retain that sole producer credit and of course I agreed to it. But I’m fine with it. I made my bed by leaving the band in 2010.”

Despite the internal adjustments and his decade-plus absence from the group, morale within the Dream Theater camp appears to be at an all-time high. When asked if he thought the progressive metal pioneers could eventually launch a “50th-anniversary tour,” Portnoy remained incredibly optimistic about their longevity.

“Bands like Metallica and Anthrax are coming up on 50 soon, so yeah, I think it’s doable. Jordan Rudess, our keyboard player, just turned 69, so he’d be coming up on 80, but it’s not out of the question. The 40th anniversary has been everything we dreamed of and a hundred times more. So I certainly hope there’s more to come.”
