Nearly a year after his departure from Dream Theater, acclaimed drummer Mike Mangini has opened up about his famously professional and “classy” reaction to being replaced by original member Mike Portnoy. In a new, deeply philosophical interview, Mangini explained that his calm response was rooted in a personal belief system that prioritizes reason over emotion.
Speaking with Drummer’s Review, Mangini was complimented on his gracious handling of his 2023 dismissal from the progressive metal giants after a 13-year tenure. He responded with a unique and cerebral explanation of his mindset at the time.
“It was a pretty simple reaction by me. It’s just the way I’m brought up,” he began (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), before detailing his philosophical approach. “When you study the brain, the emotional area of the brain surrounds the reasoning area which surrounds the moral area. So when you are tied up with emotion, you can’t be reasonable. Just look at the world. And if you don’t have a good set of morals, you don’t know how to reason… If you haven’t even asked the question — not who am I, but what am I — I don’t think you can wrap your head around this.”
Mangini also explained that his reaction was guided by a strict personal policy of keeping band business private and professional.
“I just don’t buy in to anybody in any band revealing things that are family. These things happen; it’s a closed-doors thing,” he stated. “You don’t reveal stuff about your coworkers. I just can’t wrap my head around that.”
He stressed that he holds no ill will and applies this same “template” to all of his past musical endeavors, whether it be Dream Theater, Extreme, or Annihilator.
“I emotionally feel the exact same way about all of them,” he said. “I’m on text message threads with the people, and anybody can talk to me anytime they want. It’s stuff like that. So it’s all just whatever. Seriously.”
When Portnoy‘s return to Dream Theater was first announced on October 25, 2023, Mangini said in a statement: “I understand Dream Theater‘s decision to get Mike Portnoy back at this time. As was said from Day 1, my place was not to fill all the roles that Mike held in the band. I was to play the drums in order to help the band carry on. My main role of keeping our live show working tightly on a nightly basis was an intense and rewarding experience. Thankfully, I got to experience playing music with these iconic musicians, as well as some fun times laced with humor. I also really enjoyed spending lots of time with the crew…’
Mike Mangini became the drummer for Dream Theater in late 2010, winning the widely publicized audition held after co-founder Mike Portnoy departed. Mangini was selected from a field of six other elite drummers—Marco Minnemann, Virgil Donati, Aquiles Priester, Thomas Lang, Peter Wildoer, and Derek Roddy—a three-day event that was documented for the reality show, The Spirit Carries On.
