Swedish melodic death metal pioneers Dark Tranquillity are officially deep into the songwriting process for their next full-length record. Expected to arrive in late 2027, the upcoming LP will serve as the highly anticipated follow-up to the group’s 2024 studio album, Endtime Signals.

During an appearance at the 2026 Rock Hard Festival in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, last month, frontman Mikael Stanne spoke with journalist Marcus Schleutermann of Rock Hard magazine about the current status of the band’s creative timeline.

“It’s a lot of work in progress, actually. That’s what we’re doing right now. I’m going home tomorrow, and then we’re gonna head into the studio immediately, basically, and do… yeah, continue writing. We’ve been writing for a couple months already,” Stanne stated.

Detailing the projected release schedule and the collaborative efforts driving the new material, the vocalist explained how the current lineup has grown closer and more cohesive since their last studio outing.

“The idea is to have the album finished around the end of the year, and get it out after next summer. That’s how these things work. It takes forever, but it’s going really great, and I’m really excited. Sure, the pressure is on, but it’s always on. You always have to think, like, ‘How do we top the last one?’ But that’s why we take our time with it, [to] make sure that nothing is left to chance, everything is exactly what we want. And, yeah, it’s a very time-consuming process, but it’s one I really, really enjoy, actually. It’s mostly me and Johan [Reinholdz] and Martin [Brändström] but everybody else is kind of involved during the early process as well. So, it’s gonna be really cool. I think we know ourselves better as a band now, so I think that’s gonna hopefully… I’m pretty sure it’s gonna translate into the songwriting and how the album’s gonna sound too. So it’s super exciting. I can’t wait,” he explained.

Released in August 2024 through Century Media Records, Endtime Signals marked the band’s thirteenth studio effort and their tenth consecutive full-length collaboration with the label. It directly built upon the massive success of their previous records, including 2016’s Atoma, which peaked at No. 2 on the Swedish album charts, and 2020’s Moment, which earned the group a Swedish Grammis award.

The 2024 record firmly established Dark Tranquillity‘s refreshed lineup, introducing drummer Joakim Strandberg Nilsson and bassist Christian Jansson to the fold alongside Mikael Stanne, Martin Brändström, and Johan Reinholdz. The project featured distinctive cover artwork from founding Dark Tranquillity guitarist Niklas Sundin. Behind the boards, the album was produced by Brändström at Rogue Music, engineered by Alexander Backlund at Fascination Street Studios, and handled by prominent mixing and mastering engineer Jens Bogren (Kreator, At The Gates).

Dark Tranquillity and Soen recently completed a co-headlining North American trek dubbed “Scandinavian Heavy Arts Tour.”
