Metallica has released professional live footage from the opening night of their long-awaited Australian stadium tour, offering fans a high-definition look at their performance of the Black Album classic “Holier Than Thou.” The video was captured during the band’s November 1, 2025, concert at Optus Stadium in Perth.
The Perth performance kicked off the Australian leg of the “M72 World Tour,” marking the heavy metal titans’ first visit to the continent since headlining the Soundwave Festival in 2013. Unlike the “No-Repeat Weekend” format utilized in Europe and North America—where the band played two nights in every city with completely different setlists—the Australian and New Zealand dates were billed as high-stakes “One Night Only” events.
The video release showcases the band’s massive stadium production, which features the famous “Snake Pit” extended from the stage, immersing James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo directly into the crowd.
However, the Perth show was not without off-stage drama. The concert made local headlines after two fans, aged 20 and 23, were arrested for a dangerous stunt involving the stadium’s infrastructure. The men allegedly scaled a central tower inside Optus Stadium while the band was performing. Video footage from the night showed police officers intercepting the shirtless climbers, who were subsequently charged with trespassing and removed from the venue.
Following the eventful Perth opener, the tour—supported by Evanescence and Suicidal Tendencies—swept through major cities across the country. The trek included stops at the Adelaide Oval on November 5, Marvel Stadium in Melbourne on November 8, and Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on November 12.
The Australian run concluded just this past weekend with a massive show at Accor Stadium in Sydney on November 15. Metallica will play one final show in the region tomorrow, Wednesday, November 19, at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.
The “M72” tour is in support of the band’s 2023 studio album, 72 Seasons.
