Metallica has officially released professionally shot footage of their earth-shaking performance of “Enter Sandman” from their May 7th concert at Lane Stadium in Virginia. The performance famously generated so much energy from the 60,000 fans in attendance that it was measured as a small earthquake by the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory. You can watch the video down below.
For years, “Enter Sandman” has served as the high-energy anthem for Virginia Tech Hokies football games, sparking an intense reaction of jumping and cheering from the crowd. This long-standing tradition reached new heights during Metallica‘s recent concert in Blacksburg, Virginia, where the overwhelming energy of the audience resulted in ground tremors that were recorded by the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory (VTSO).
VTSO Director Martin Chapman confirmed to FOX Weather that their seismograph, located about a mile from Lane Stadium, detected the ground motion. The peak of this activity occurred exactly when Metallica played “Enter Sandman.” While fans quickly nicknamed the incident the “Metallica Quake,” Chapman emphasized that the seismic movement was minimal. “The magnitude would have been less than 1.0,” he said, adding it was “too small to be felt even a mile away” and too small to register on the Richter scale or receive an official rating, according to the FOX Forecast Center.
The bond between “Enter Sandman” and Virginia Tech began on August 27, 2000, when the university introduced its first video board at Lane Stadium. Since then, the song has evolved into one of the most iconic traditions in college football. “It all starts with ‘Enter Sandman,’” Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry remarked last season. “There’s no better entrance in college football.”
In addition to the ground-shaking rendition of the 1991 classic, the band also released high-quality footage of “Lux Æterna,” the lead single from their latest album, 72 Seasons, from the same Virginia show.
The concert was part of Metallica’s ongoing M72 world tour, which continues across North America through June. The tour features a unique “No Repeat Weekends” format in many cities, where the band plays two distinct setlists with no repeated songs over two nights. Support for the massive tour includes a rotating lineup of major acts such as Pantera, Limp Bizkit, Suicidal Tendencies, and Ice Nine Kills.
