At the world premiere of their new documentary, “Metallica Saved My Life“, at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 12, the traditional roles of rock star and fan were reversed, as the members of Metallica found themselves in awe of the very people their music has inspired. The film, directed by Jonas Åkerlund, turns the lens on the band’s global fanbase, showcasing what frontman James Hetfield called their “deep emotional human stories.”
Speaking on the red carpet, the band expressed profound respect for the fans who shared their personal journeys for the film. Guitarist Kirk Hammett described the evening as a “pretty special occasion for a pretty special film about a lot of very, very special people.”
Hetfield admitted that seeing the film’s subjects in person at the premiere turned him into a fanboy. “It’s hard to not just geek out and wave at them,” he said. “‘I know you, you’re in the movie!’ [I] try not to do that, but you can’t help it! Once you hear their stories, it’s hard to not love them.”
This powerful connection between the band and their audience is the documentary’s central theme. Hetfield revealed he was initially concerned about how fame from the film might affect the fans involved, but those fears were quickly put to rest. “I was very afraid that it was going to change them in a fame way,” he explained, “but they’re helping us get the message out that we’re all the same.”
For Hammett, the process of making the film was an eye-opening experience. “I learned a lot,” he shared. “As James was saying, we’re curious about our fans, and I learned so much from this film about them. It was a really special experience for me personally.”
The inspiration for the documentary came from an unlikely source: comedian and friend of the band, Jim Breuer. Hetfield explained that while touring with Metallica, Breuer got to know many of their most dedicated fans personally. “And he says, ‘James, you have got to hear these fricking stories, they’re unbelievable – where these people came from, how they got into music and why.’… So He inspired this movie.”
“Metallica Saved My Life” is the third official film in the band’s history, following 2004’s “Some Kind Of Monster” and 2013’s “Metallica Through The Never“. Based on the band’s emotional reaction at the premiere, this latest project, which focuses entirely on the lives they’ve touched, may be their most personal one yet.
